“I would not dare to count myself among the famous warriors—even though I share the same brave heart.”
Nakano Takeko
Nakano Takeko was a real historical figure and one of Japan’s last samurai. During the late 1800s, a time when traditional samurai culture was fading, she led a group of brave women called the Joshitai in the Boshin War. Despite the challenges of the era, Takeko showed incredible courage and loyalty, fighting to protect her people. This children’s book introduces her life and story in engaging way, highlighting her bravery and the values of the samurai.
Traditionally, women were not permitted to fight alongside male samurai, but Takeko defied convention, insisting on joining the army to defend what they believed in. Alongside her, about twenty other courageous women fought by her side. They later became known as the Joshitai.
Takeko’s spirit and bravery live on as her enduring legacy. The Aizu Autumn Festival, held every year, commemorates her heroic actions. And at Hokai Temple, there stands a special monument dedicated to her name. To honor Takeko and her fearless army, young girls wear hakama and Shiro headbands, participating in a procession to pay their respects.
